Warin golf course

My third golf course review in Ubon is the Suppasitthiprasong Golf Club สนามกอล์ฟ ค่ายสรรีสิทธิประส locally known as the Warin course or the Army Base course.

240 baht ($8 AUS) for 18 holes this is another 9 hole course. The caddies here know there stuff unlike at the WIng 21 course.The greens are in good condition and the fairways are not to bad. The main problem (for me anyway) is that the course is boring! The first hole is fantastic and gets your hopes up for a good course but after that every hole is basically dead straight apart from the last hole. Hole no 2 used to have a nice dog leg in it but they have changed the lay out recently.

Five water hazards to negotiate and just a small amount of sand, it is worth playing just to get your driver out for a bit of a whack but personally I think that the other courses in Ubon are more interesting.

Continuing my reviews on Ubon Ratchatani Golf Courses I now bring you the course at the Wing 21 Air Force Base in Ubon. (สนามส่งเสริมกีฬากอล์ฟสวัสดิการ กองบิน 21)

Location wise for me it is brilliant as it is just a 4 minute drive at 5.30 am from my house or just 1 minute from Peppers.

The people I play with were hesitant to go there as they said last time they played it was in very poor condition but in my quest to review every course in Ubon they reluctantly agreed. They were very surprised to see huge improvements had been made since their last visit.

The fairways were in very good condition and whilst the greens were a little sandy they were still nice to play on. I was amazed at the amount of work being done and even at 6am there were well over 50 workers busy keeping the course in top condition.

It is more interesting then the Warin Army course with just enough water and sand to keep things interesting.

It is a 9 hole course like every other one in Ubon however the very exciting news is that work is being done to increase it to 18. I was told that this plan has been in the pipeline for many years but I can confirm that work is definitely now underway.

180 baht (AUS $6) for 9 holes, 240 baht (AUS $8) to go around twice. Add about 20% more if you want to play on weekends or holidays.

Excately one year ago today I started this blog when I wrote this.

In the following 365 days I have posted 201 times, uploaded 660 photos and recieved 577 comments (plus numerous emails) from the more then 30,000 people that have dropped by.

My busiest month was May.

The busiest post for a single day was last month when I wrote this.

The most popular google search was for ‘tai orathai’ followed by ‘life in rural thailand’

I have for the most part enjoyed blogging. It is something I look forward to reading again in the years to come to remind me of the ups and downs of living in Thailand. There have been a few times when I go AWOL for a few weeks and it always surprises me who takes the time to send me a quick email to tell me to wake up as they are missing there ‘fix!” These and all other comments are always a joy to read and I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to read my ramblings or even better yet, to leave a message.

As promised I am starting a Golf in Ubon section.

There are four golf courses in Ubon that I have played at and I will review them all separately over the next few weeks. After that I hope to play at a few more located towards Sisaket and Mukdahan.

The บ้านสวนอุบล กอล์ฟ แอนด์ รีสอร์ท Baan Suan Ubon Golf and Resort is located on the main road to Sisaket just 100 metres off the main ring road (towards Sisaket.) For me it is the prettiest course within the Ubon city limits but it is also a very small course. Every hole is a par 3 and on hole number 4 I grab my smallest number club for the day which is a 5 iron! Every other hole I use either a 7, 8 or 9 off the tee!

If you call ahead you can organise a caddy but as a rule they are usually not hanging around. Also call ahead for an early tee off. (I usually tee off at 5.45am)

As much as I think that the pancakes at Peppers in Ubon are fantastic there is nothing quite like making them at home with your family and yes that includes the two and three year old kids!

We moved the gas burner to the floor for easier access for Ariya.

I just realised that I never updated the blog with the final outcome of the visit of the Thai PM, really sorry about that. It turned out as a real fizzer protest wise (always a good thing) but as I mentioned earlier it was good for business! One day we were inundated with hungry and thirsty red shirt protest organisers, the next day it was the yellow shirts and on the actual day it was the police, military and media outlets including a large one from Aljazerra.
That morning Ubon did seem a lot quieter and there was plenty of extra security across the road from the shop at the Air Force base.

An hour later the PM’s jet landed and he was then taken to his various engagements direct via helicopter (with two military choppers escorting it). Straight out to the rural villages he was visiting and then back to to the airport without ever having to set foot inside the city of Ubon.

Hi everyone, my apologies for not blogging over the last two weeks. Thanks for those who took the time to check up on my via email. There are the usual excuses not for blogging such as lack of motivation, family and work but on top of that I have also been sick with hay fever attacks, been playing some golf, a visa run to Chong Mek, and my two sister in laws and three nieces visiting for four days.
The inlaws are gone, I am feeling better and the motivation has returned so hopefully I will see you back her soon. One thing I would like to do is add a golf section on here. I have now played three local courses and hope to play a few more soon so will put up a separate page about these courses over the next few days.

Today was the turn of the yellow shirts to take over Peppers for drinks and a planning session about the arrival tomorrow of Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
After the yellow shirts left the top brass of the Police and security personal from Bangkok then took up a few tables as well for more then an hour.
No matter who we support , one thing is for sure – it is good for business!!
It seems that the yellow shirts have booked solid at least one hotel in town (The Regent) which would suggest a fairly large contingent of protesters coming in from Bangkok to go up against any kind of local Red Shirt gathering.
It is going to be an interesting day tomorrow for sure!

Yesterday Peppers was inundated with Red shirt protest organisers. This afternoon the shop is full of police and defence personal also preparing for the Prime Ministers arrival tomorrow.
When questioned about tomorrow the police said they are hoping for a simple peaceful protest but are prepared for the worst.
